Position/Title: Senior SQL Server Database Administrator
Department: MIS
I. Primary Purpose
Incumbent will be responsible for implementing and assisting the Senior Manager of Systems Administration Group with the design and maintenance of database system components, which will make systems administration tasks easier. Incumbent will function as part of the Systems Administration team to support the existing technologies and design and rollout new database technologies on MS Windows platforms. Incumbent will work with IS and Business units to proactively gather business requirements, communicate Technology requirements and develop a standardized approach for the system support. Incumbent will be responsible for documenting and training other team members on these technologies. Incumbent will participate in an on-call rotation with other team members to support all system related issues on a 24x7 basis.
II. Key Responsibilities
· Responsible for support and maintenance of MS SQL Server 2000/2005 Database technologies.
· Responsible for analysis, design, and implementation of database systems in support of Business and Infrastructure technologies.
· Key Production Support focuses are in the areas of Security, Manageability, High Availability and Disaster Recovery.
· Create and apply solutions for data privacy, data recovery, data maintenance, data integrity, and space management of the physical databases.
· Formulate the requirements for a high performing database and apply experience in database tuning methodologies and monitoring techniques.
· Establish guidelines for tuning of application code and assist the application development teams.
· Create SCR’s and project plans and adheres to all of the Portfolio Management and Change Management guidelines.
· Work directly with the Senior Manager of Systems Administration Group and the Director of Systems and Architecture to create and manage projects, budgets and group strategy.
· Work closely with the Senior Manager of Systems Administration Group and Senior Manager of Windows Systems Administration to develop and implement standards, change control, and transition of systems responsibility from the Systems Architecture team.
· Work directly with the Manager of Systems Security and Directory Services to develop and implement security standards and policies for the environment.
· Work closely with IS groups to establish standards for databases, applications, security and systems management architecture.
· Work closely with application and technology partners in order to develop and leverage processes and technologies in an effort to support and maintain database systems in a standardized and efficiently manageable method.
· Work with other team members during weekend and after-hours maintenance windows to apply hardware and software changes to the systems.
· Rotate with team members for the on-call support schedule.
· Develop and Implement Project plans created in MS Project.
· Ensure that best practices and the company’s standards are followed after the transition of system support responsibilities from the Systems Architecture team.
· Establish and maintain effective cross-functional partnerships with staff and executive teams in order to support business systems.
· Assist in prioritizing projects and the day-to-day workload of the Systems Administration teams.
· Work directly with the other managers and their staff within IS to coordinate and prioritize work efforts.
· Provide proactive communication of issues and progress/status reporting.
· Enforce and improve the company’s existing policies and procedures: Portfolio Management, Change Management, Networked Systems Monitoring, and documentation.
III. Dimensions
The incumbent has direct and broad influence on the company’s business and infrastructure applications. The hardware and software assets that comprise these applications are extremely valuable both in cost (multi-million dollar infrastructure) and in the functions being supported. The Senior SQL Server Database Administrator reports to the Senior Manager of Systems Administration Group.
IV. Education & Experience Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent work experience.
· 8+ years of data processing experience.
· 6+ years of hands-on technical experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005 Database Administration.
· Proficiency in the following is required:
- Design and Administration of Microsoft’s SQL Server RDBMS and other database technologies.
- Design, Configuration, Implementation and Administration of Database Server, Storage and Network configurations.
- Physical Data source analysis.
- Design and execution of Data extract, transform and load techniques and technologies.
- Entity Relationship diagrams and Logical Database schema design.
- Physical Database design.
- SQL scripting.
- Database System security and privacy solutions.
- Database Replication and Clustering techniques.
- Backup and Restore of databases.
- Database Resource maintenance and management.
- Windows scripting and Visual Basic Programming.
- Design and Administration of Database System Monitoring Solutions such as SQL Profiler, Quest Central and HP OpenView.
· Proficiency in the following is desired:
- 2+ years of hands-on technical experience with Oracle 8.x, 9.x, and, 10.x Database Administration.
- MS Windows administration.
- Disk Storage and Logical Volume Management (LVM).
· Minimum of 2 years experience managing technical projects, preferably in a cross-functional setting.
· Minimum of 2 years of operational and resource management experience (day-to-day operations of systems).
· Must possess excellent oral and written communications skills for presentations and status reporting.
· Experience in application development environments.
· Experience in managing Backup Systems is a plus.
