Topic: SQL Server 2008 Encryption - Protecting Your Data @ Rest

In 2007 the parent company of TJ Maxx stores was attacked by hackers who stole 45.7 million credit and debit card numbers stored in their databases. The attack cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars, dozens of lawsuits, and a lot of bad publicity.

SQL Server 2008 includes several features designed to help defend against these types of attacks against confidential data stored in the database. These tools include symmetric and asymmetric encryption functions, certificate and key management, hash functions, extensible key management (EKM), transparent data encryption (TDE) and even SQL CLR functionality. All of these tools will help you protect your data at rest in the database.

In this presentation you will explore these features with Michael and see several of them in action. Michael will talk about how encryption works in SQL Server 2008, how to achieve the best performance possible with encrypted data, and how to work around some of the limitations of the SQL Server encryption implementation. He'll also discuss best practices for your own SQL Server encryption implementations.
