Topic: This presentation presents SQL Server Data Mining (SSDM) for SQL Server Professionals based on the speaker's past presentations for SQL Saturday. Starting with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), the demo includes the interfaces important for professional development, including Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS), highlighting Integration Services, and PowerShell. The interactive demos are based on Microsoft's Contoso Retail sample data. Finally we will evaluate where Microsoft data mining can help you in a practical business environment, which may include Oracle and SAS.

December 20th NJSQL Meeting - NJSQL Speaker Idol

The December NJSQL User Group meeting will feature a number of SQL presentations provided user group members. If would like to participate in this year's "NJSQL Speaker Idol", please send me an email with your name/topic by Monday, December 19th. The number of participants is limited to 5 (2-3 spots are already filled).

"NJSQL Speaker Idol" participants with be required to provide 15 minutes of SQL Server content with/without the use of PowerPoint slides/demos. A vote will be taken at the end of the presentations and a number of prizes will be distributed.

How to manage data which changes over time, or temporal data, is getting a lot of attention these days due to the recent approval of new temporal extensions to ANSI/ISO SQL. And bitemporal data or data which changes over two dimensions of time independently, in particular is getting more attention due to the complete and queryable audit trail it provides in our current environment of increased regulation. This presentation will give an introduction to temporal data terminology and concepts. An example will be utilized to illustrate the differences between different types of temporality and as well as different physical storage and architecture alternatives. In addition comparisons will be made to dimensional modeling and an overview of current vendors offerings will be discussed.

Bio:

Craig is a Principal at BitemporalData.com. His background includes over 25 years of information technology experience including data architecture, enterprise architecture, project leadership, engagement management and general management. Craig is currently focused on helping to further the state of the art and adoption of temporal data management with a specific focus on bitemporal data. In this capacity he has led some of the most comprehensive evaluations of different vendors temporal and bitemporal capabilities. Topic: TDD – Thwarting Database Defects

It’s bad enough to spend hours finding and fixing database defects, explaining to the rest of the team what went wrong and trying to clean up the mess. It’s even worse when a defect causes the end-user to make a bad decision. Database defects are far too costly and most testing practices do not adequately detect or prevent them. This presentation introduces tSQLt, a framework for automated database unit testing. You’ll learn techniques to write SQL code that is resilient to defects and is easier to change and maintain.

Sebastian Meine :

Sebastian is a principal trainer and consultant with sqlity.net llc (http://sqlity.net) and CTO for TSTS Inc, a company that provides an online personalized training and workout solution (http://www.tanyastroh.com). He specializes in T-SQL Test Driven Development (TDD) and performance and shares his passion and knowledge regularly with audiences world-wide through his writings and speaking engagements. After receiving his PhD in Computer Science, Sebastian moved to the United States to begin his career as a software developer for a global Fortune 50 company. He quickly rose to the role of software architect, functioning as a SQL performance and TDD expert, assuming responsibility for the code quality and performance of dozens of large-scale database installations nationwide.

Dennis Lloyd: Dennis is a software development coach at Curiously Correct. He has broad experience in the software development life-cycle with specialized focus on Agile practices and database technologies. He has successfully assisted development groups through learning key practices including test driven development, continuous integration and deployment, iteration planning, retrospectives, pair programming and collective code ownership. His goal is to help development teams deliver value to their customers by focusing on improving quality and development work-flow. Dennis holds a BS in Information Technology from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MS of Software Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. When he is not coaching or development software, Dennis can be found at a milonga, an Argentine Tango dance party. He recently spent six months on sabbatical in Buenos Aires indulging in this passion. He has observed that some of the techniques used to teach tango can be applied to teaching software development.

I’ll build 3 different examples of maps in SSRS from scratch, using the SSRS Map Gallery, ESRI shape files, and SQL Server spatial data. I’ll also show how you can create drilldown effects, to navigate from a summary map to a more detailed map, integrating sales data. I’ll also show how to use C# to call a web service to pull geo coordinates into a database.

When people talk about migrating their applications to the cloud, one of the primary topics discussed is storage. How is the data stored?! The Windows Azure platform offers different storage options, including SQL Azure for relational data. As you'll see in tonight's talk, it's pretty easy to get data from SQL Server up into SQL Azure. The tools and concepts are virtually the same. Our brains are sometimes hard-wired to assume a relational database is how and where we'll store data when designing an application. But in the cloud, that might not always be optimal for achieving scale and optimal management of costs. We'll also explore some of the non-relational storage services provided by Azure, including blobs, tables, and queues.

This session will be an over view of Microsoft’s current Business Intelligence solution and a few new Data Management tools and components. I will discuss and demo each component of the Microsoft BI stack, including some of the newer items, such as PowerPivot. Then I will go briefly through some of the new and interesting Data Management solutions, including Parallel Data Warehouse, Fast Track Data Warehouse and SQL Azure. At the end of the sessions, attendees should have a solid, high-level understanding of the Microsoft Business Intelligence solution and how it works and be aware of a few of the new Data Management components.

Jaimie Fox is a Technical Solutions Professional for Microsoft in the NY/NJ Metro district where he is the district’s database/BI community lead. He has 14 years of experience in delivering business analysis, data warehousing, and business intelligence solutions.
